For the past 18 years, Judy Leesburg has been teaching the art of tablescaping to thousands of people across the Southeast. From the time she was three years old, she was cutting flowers from her grandmother's garden and began arranging and displaying them all over the house in her hometown of Indianola, Mississippi. By the time she was in elementary school, she was creating hats and capes with straight pins out of 2 1/2 foot leaves from Castor bean plants.
She believes you can create beautiful tablescapes without purchasing expensive floral arrangements and that the road to creating successful tablescapes is paved with simplicity and practice. Judy teaches how to use an artist's eye to think how an ordinary household item can add beauty to a table arrangement. For example, she often uses the cap of a hairspray can to create landscape scenes.
Her biggest teaching challenge is getting people to trust their instincts and to believe in themselves. Although many people tell her they can't create anything, they soon find out they can indeed create a beautiful tablescape in a short amount of time. Once they start working on a design, Judy often hears them say how easy it is. "I teach people to think about their projects and what they want to convey," she says. "From there, they take the first step and start improvising."
Currently, Judy is writing a book on tablescapes and will soon have an accompanying CD to demonstrate the making of tablescapes for a variety of events. She travels the United States to speak to groups and is working to create a television show about tablescape design.
